Composting options considered
A City of Vernon pilot project has diverted over 230,000 pounds of food waste and organics from the landfill.
The city and Spa Hills Compost have partnered on an organics collection program over the summer, with collection bins placed at city hall and behind the Schubert Centre.
“Under the pilot, organics were collected twice a week by Spa Hills Compost. The pilot program budget was $5,000 with 100 per cent of program costs funded by the Climate Action Revolving Fund. It’s a program the city developed using the Climate Action Rebate Incentive Program rebates to fund projects that reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions,” a city news release said.
With the pilot wrapping up Nov. 4, the city is looking at options for future composting and seeking feedback in a survey at www.engagevernon.ca.
