Police investigate ‘suspicious’ fire at Lake Country’s Airport Inn

Oct 18, 2019 | 11:43 AM

A fire at the Airport Inn in Lake Country is being treated as suspicious.

Fire crews found the north end of the building on Petrie Road completely engulfed in flames around 12:30 a.m. Friday morning, and were able to put it out.

Police say a number of tenants residing at the Inn were all accounted for and no one was injured.

“Lake Country RCMP have since secured the property as the fire department and RCMP fire investigators continue to examine the scene in order to determine the cause of the fire,” Kelowna RCMP Const. Lesley Smith said. “Although this investigation is in its early stages, the circumstances surrounding the fire are being considered suspicious in nature.”

Any witnesses to the fire are asked to call the Lake Country RCMP at 250-766-2288, or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The motel has been in the news over the last few years for health and safety issues, which led to disputes with the District of Lake Country, and the owner being denied a business licence.
