Vernon business owner stressing importance of cyber security following hacking incident

Sometimes, even when you think you’re secure, hackers still find a way to access your electronic data.

It’s an unsettling feeling that has one Vernon business owner issuing an important reminder to the community to take cyber security efforts seriously.

“Seek out the advice of cyber security experts and make sure that every one of your devices is secure, and that you’re constantly monitoring it,” Vernon business owner Judy Fullerton, advises.

Fullerton is the owner of East Hill Physiotherapy and Acupuncture.

Last Friday, their email marketing system Constant Contact was hacked triggering emails falsely claiming that clients owed $1929.30.

Luckily the online marketing system was rarely used and didn’t contain any personal banking information, according to Fullerton.

“They accessed an email list that wasn’t associated with any other information, there was no billing information, there was no names there was nothing. I knew that that’s where it was coming from so immediately we phoned the company who is very responsible and they shut it right down.”

Since the incident, Fullerton has ramped up cyber security efforts through password protection and by consulting with a cyber security expert and advises others to do the same.

“Don’t be the expert, get the expert to help you,” she said.
