Update: Train hits vehicle; driver flees

CP Rail is the latest to confirm an incident of a train hitting a vehicle in the Shuswap.

A spokesperson says a freight train “made contact” with a a vehicle at the 50th Street crossing in Canoe around 8:20 a.m. Sunday.

“There were no injuries to the crew. CP Police and RCMP are investigating the incident,” said Salem Woodrow from CP Rail media relations.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Scott West said the driver of the car fled the scene.

RCMP have confirmed details of a train hitting a vehicle in Canoe, near Salmon Arm, this morning.

“We did have a train versus vehicle collision in Canoe,” said Staff Sgt. Scott West of Salmon Arm RCMP to Vernon Matters. “CP police is taking the lead. Driver of car fled the scene.”

The incident was said to have taken place at a vehicle crossing at 50th Street NE, and the vehicle was pushed some distance down the track.

Nothing official has been released as yet by RCMP, but reports indicate a vehicle was hit by a train in Canoe, a community hear Salmon Arm, this morning.

Information from Shuswap Scanner on Twitter says there is a report the driver fled the scene.

“Unconfirmed reports that a #CPRail train has hit a vehicle in the #CanoeBC area. The report also say that the driver of the vehicle has fled the scene #RCMP #CPPolice are being notified,” said the tweet.

A Salmon Arm media outlet is reporting the incident occurred at a vehicle crossing at 50th Street NE and the vehicle was pushed some distance down the track.
