The Art of Self Defense October 7th

Oct 1, 2019 | 7:58 AM

The Art of Self Defense is playing at the Vernon Towne Cinema on October 7th by the Okanagan Screen Arts Society.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg (Casey), this film is about a timid bookkeeper who is attached and beaten severely by a roving motorcycle gang one night. Following the attack, Casey decides to join a neighborhood karate studio to learn how to protect himself.

Alessandro Nivola is his somewhat bizarre sensei and under his watchful eye Casey gains a sense of confidence for the first time in his life. Imogen Poots (Anna) is a hardcore brown belt who also attends the same class. As Casey attends these night classes, he tries to master the skills he learns to improve all aspects of his life and become more manly.

During these classes, he discovers a sinister underworld of fraternity, brutality and hyper-masculinity, sending him on entirely unexpected journey.

It is a joy to watch Casey evolve, progress and gain self-confidence. The script is sharp in all the right places and even the serious moments are funny because of the dark comedic writing by Riley Stearns. The film has some twists and turns and it is unique and fun with a very creative plot.

Although a bit offbeat, The Art of Self-Defense is an original dark comedy that takes toxic masculinity to absurd extremes.

Showtimes at 5:15 & 7:45 p.m. Pre-show intro by Sally Evans, local entertainer. Enjoy live music in the lobby before the early show courtesy of Les Copeland. Cash wine bar open for both shows.

Advance tickets available at the Towne Cinema box office and Expressions of Time bookstore.
