City fills key fire department position

Oct 1, 2019 | 4:45 PM

Teagan Burton has been hired as the full time fire prevention officer for the Armstrong Spallumcheen Fire Department, starting Dec. 2.

Burton has been a member of the department since 2014, and will work with Fire Chief Ian Cummings.

“The city welcomes Teagan to the position and wishes her success in her new position,” a news release from the City of Armstrong said.

The hiring means Lawrie Skolrood will be retiring from the fire department in the near future, according to Mayor Chris Pieper.

“Lawrie was on contract with us after his retirement from Vernon just to help us out, so Lawrie is retiring officially. Teagan will be starting Dec. 2 and then Lawrie is staying on for a while to provide training and stuff like that. Lawrie has just been a tremendous asset to our fire department and we’re really going to miss him because he’s a wealth of information and just a first-class guy,” Pieper told Vernon Matters.

Skolrood is a former deputy fire chief in Vernon who before his fire career, played in the Canadian Football League, retiring in 1988.
