A man was shot by an RCMP officer during a struggle near Bear Creek Provincial Park early Friday morning, according to the RCMP.

However the unidentified male was believed to have suffered non-life threatening injuries, stated the RCMP release.

The Independent Investigation Office of B.C. has secured the scene and begun its investigation into the police-involved shooting.

According to the RCMP, officers received a complaint of a male jumping in a front of a vehicle along Westside Road near the park around 1 a.m.

The man apparently tried to hit the vehicle with an object.

“West Kelowna RCMP members responded and located a male in the park they believed to be connected with the complaint carrying garden shears,” said the release issued by Dawn Roberts, Director in Charge of B.C. RCMP Communications. “While attempting to arrest the individual, an interaction occurred and the male was shot by police, however he fled and entered Okanagan Lake.

“He ended up on a log boom in the lake and police began to negotiate with the man.”

An RCMP boat was called in and the man was eventually taken into custody without further incident at 7:20 a.m.

Roberts said the wounded man received immediate medical assistance.

As the IIO investigates the shooting, West Kelowna RCMP continue to investigate the initial complaint.
