An 18-year-old Vernon man is facing firearms charges after an incident with some hitchhikers.

RCMP said three people were trying to hitchhike in the area of 34th St. and 19th Ave. around midnight Sept. 1, but they declined a ride when a vehicle pulled over, due to the lack of available seating.

“During the interaction between both parties, the ride was declined by the three victims and a verbal argument ensued,” Const. Kelly Brett said. “The driver of the vehicle then allegedly produced what was believed to be a sawed-off shotgun.”

Brett said the victims quickly fled the area.

“Further investigation into the incident led frontline officers to an address in the Vernon area, and with the assistance of the Police Dog Service Unit, a male suspect was located hiding in an outbuilding and taken into custody without incident. The firearm was located and seized by police,” she said.

The 18 -year-old suspect is facing six counts of firearm-related charges and is scheduled to appear in court at a future date.
