Downtown Vernon’s popular Civic Sounds not only entertained thousands of people over the summer, it also help local people in need.

The Thursday night summer concerts at the Civic Plaza, put on by the Downtown Vernon Association, raised $2,973 for the local food bank.

Lt. Stefan Reid of the Salvation Army said they will use the funds for their programs and to buy food items.

“We are tremendously grateful for the continued support of our community. Thank you to everyone who donated and it’s because of you that we are able to give hope today and every day,” Reid added.

Seven bands performed at Civic Sounds this summer and over 6,000 people attended.

The concert series will be back in 2020.

“It is imperative that our events foster community spirit and give back whenever possible,” Downtown Vernon Association’s Events and Marketing Coordinator Dudley Coulter said. “It’s good for business.”

“This Civic Sounds fundraiser is a great example of what can be done when the community comes together to support a cause.”

Coulter also noted one of the 50/50 ticket draw winners donated his winnings, which totalled $445, back to the food bank.

“The winner asked to be anonymous demonstrating the everyday heroes that have such a positive impact on our community.”

The DVA is thanking concert attendees for their support and event sponsors who helped in the fundraising efforts: 107.5 Beach Radio, Bannister Honda, City of Vernon and ValleyFirst.
