‘Be the Light’ aims to remember suicide victims and survivors

Sep 1, 2019 | 6:00 AM

According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, it’s estimated that 10 people die by suicide every day, and another two hundred make the attempt daily across the country.

Those staggering statistics are one of the reasons why CMHA Vernon is hosting an event to mark World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.

The third annual event will be held at the Polson Park Bandshell from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The event called ‘Be The Light’ aims to reduce the shame and stigma of suicide while raising awareness about people at risk of suicide.

“Guilt, fear, and shame are powerful feelings that can keep us in the shadows when talking about mental health challenges including suicide,” said Julia Payson, Executive Director for Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Vernon and District Branch.

“When we publicly share our thoughts and feelings about suicide, it lessens the stigma and opens opportunities for others to get the help they need, whether it be reaching out to a loved one, medical professional, co-worker or the Crisis Line,” she said.

Just prior to the start of the event the CMHA will be providing supplies for people to decorate their own memorial lanterns at 5:15 p.m. People are encouraged to bring photos of loved ones who have lost their lives to suicide to place on their lantern.

Participants will then walk to the commemorative tree, which was planted to remember those lost to suicide in the Vernon community.

For more details please call the Canadian Mental Health Association at 250-542-3114 ext. 226 or email at support@cmhavernon.ca and help reduce the shame and stigma that surrounds suicide to bring hope, healing and remembrance.
