United Way delivers 50 car seats to North Okanagan families in need

It’s essential to ensure the safety of any young child, but for many families purchasing a car seat can mean a huge financial strain.

That’s why United Way Southern Interior B.C has been traveling throughout the Okanagan to deliver $25,000 worth of car seats to families in need.

On Thursday the organization touched down at Vernon Jubilee Hospital to make a delivery.

“We’ve got just around 50 car seats to deliver to our partner charities and partner agencies in and around Vernon and the North Okanagan who interact closely with families in need, families with low income, families who just had babies in their family or who are about to have babies. [They] are simply having to make a decision between something as expensive as a car seat at $200 or putting food on the table,” Jude Brunt, Community Investment Manager with United Way Southern Interior B.C., said.

The United Way estimates there are roughly 2,000 kids in the Okanagan Valley and Columbia Shuswap travelling without an approved car seat because of financial difficulty.

“It is an essential but unfortunately it’s one of those essentials that is very expensive. You can’t buy them in thrift stores. It’s actually not safe to buy a second hand car seat or used car seat if you don’t know the history because you don’t know if it’s been in an accident before,” Brunt said.

Of the 50 car seats delivered to the Vernon area, 10 were delivered to Vernon Jubilee Hospital and six of those car seats are specifically designed to be used for premature babies.

Since the program launched four years ago, United Way has been able to reach even more families.

“Last year we were up to 114 car seats delivered across the Valley and this year we are at 170 car seats across the valley,” Brunt said.

The ability to purchase car seats for families in need is made possible through donations made to the United Way.
