Overflow crowd for adventure park meeting forces rescheduling

Aug 7, 2019 | 11:16 AM

A public hearing on a proposed mountain adventure park in Spallumcheen was so packed, it had to be rescheduled to a larger venue.

Local residents Jack and Patti Wood are seeking a zoning text change from the township to allow the facility on five properties at 1995 Powerhouse Road.

The park would be built in phases, starting with an alpine coaster ride and adding other activities like zip lines later.

Spallumcheen Mayor Christine Fraser estimates 70 to 80 people packed Tuesday’s meeting at the municipal office, and for several reasons, they decided to reschedule it to the Centennial Hall in Armstrong for Thursday night at 6 p.m.

“We had a huge number of people come out, and for fire reasons, and just the ability for everyone to be able to listen and hear, and to be able to express their opinions for and against, we made the decision that we couldn’t hold it in council chambers. It was just too small a venue,” Fraser told Vernon Matters.

Fraser said no input was received at the meeting.

“We made the decision right off the bat, so we opened the public hearing, then we recessed it and announced the day and time to everyone that was in attendance,” she said.

Four of the five properties are zoned large holding, while the other is agricultural and partially in the Agricultural Land Reserve.
