West Kal parking temporarily closing near rail trail

Jul 31, 2019 | 12:53 PM

Parking near the Okanagan Rail Trail on West Kal Road in Coldstream will be temporarily closed in early August so that upgrades can be made next to the Okanagan Rail Trail.

According to the Regional District of the North Okanagan, some of the upgrades include a paved parking area and designated parking paths from the parking lot to the rail trail.

Additional slope and mitigation work will also be conducted.

The district hopes the upgrades will produce an established parking area with access points to the trail that are more visible to users.

“We recognize that this is a busy parking area for trail users, and will try to make these upgrades cause as little disruption as possible. We will maintain access to the Okanagan Rail Trail throughout the project, and are encouraging people to try out other access points,” Mike Fox, general manager of community services, said.

While the work is being completed the regional district is recommending that drivers park at the Coldstream parking lot located at 16506 Kalamalka Road.

Users of the trail can also use the parking lot at Bailey Road which has connections to the Kal Crystal Waters Trail and the Okanagan Rail Trail, but they caution the slope is much steeper.

Once construction on the parking area is complete, the district hopes to begin to construct the North extension which the last leg of the trail, for the regional district.
