Adventure park proposed for Spallumcheen

Jul 31, 2019 | 5:10 PM

A public meeting will be held next week for a proposed tourist attraction in Spallumcheen.

Local residents Jack and Patti Wood are pitching an idea for a mountain adventure park on five properties at 1995 Powerhouse Road.

Patti Wood said on social media the park is looking at possible zip lines, tree climbs, a children’s challenge zone, a mountain coaster and more.

“If you like this idea, support this project within our community, then we encourage you to attend the upcoming public meeting to be held at the Spallumcheen Municipal Offices at 4144 Spallumcheen Way, Tuesday August 6 at 7 p.m,” Wood wrote in her post.

Four of the five properties are zoned large holding, while the other is agricultural and partially in the Agricultural Land Reserve.

The Wood’s have applied for a zoning text amendment to allow for the park.

The idea is gaining traction on social media:

“I support this 100 per cent! What a great asset to our amazing community!! I will definitely sign but unfortunately we will be on vacation Aug. 6 for the meeting, but wish you the best of luck!! Way to go Patti and Jack!,” wrote one person.

“I love this idea. Yes we live in a country community, but we need more activities for everyone around. It’s not the 80s where there was no internet or cellphones and kids/teens actually went outside to enjoy life. This will open up so much opportunity to this generation that normally they could not experience. Yes there is wildlife around this area, but let’s be realistic, bears and cougars are everywhere. This will not automatically drive them closer to the surrounding homes. It will open job opportunities, entertainment, tourism, and business to other local shops in our community,” another person said.

Another posting expressed some concerns:

“They want to have the parking lot right beside some homes on Eagle Rock Road. If this project goes through, then our road will get lots of highway traffic and many accidents will likely occur. If they want to make a road to their parking lot come off of the highway it won’t affect us nearly as bad.”

“I am not sure why we need this,” said another.
