Money for cross-country skiing

Sovereign Lake Nordic Club receives $25,000

The Sovereign Lake Nordic Club got a funding boost thanks to a $25,000 contribution from the Regional District of North Okanagan.

Amanda Shatzko, director for Electoral Area “C”, presented the cheque to Troy Hudson, general manager of the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club this week.

“Investing in active and healthy lifestyles is important to me,” Shatzko said. “This new equipment will keep the track in good condition for years to come and will allow people of all ages and skill levels to participate in sport in our region, and attract tourism and contributions to the local economy.”

The club sought funding after realizing the 54-kilometer track needed daily grooming with the cost of a new groomer priced at $450,000.

According to RDNO, the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club is the largest cross country ski club in North America with 2,000 members involved. Competitions are a regular occurrence and the track draws in people from around the world.

The $25,000 was made possible thanks to a grant from the Community Works Fund, which includes federal gas tax funding spread to communities throughout B.C.

“Donations are still needed, so I encourage others to contribute to this excellent amenity in our own backyard,” Shatzko said.
