Item left at scene of crosswalk vandalism

Jul 23, 2019 | 10:37 AM

Police say the suspect in vandalism to the rainbow crosswalk in Coldstream, left behind an item at the scene.

Cpl. Tania Finn does not say what the item was, but says investigators are trying to find out more about it.

“Investigators are working with our Integrated Forensic Identification Section to determine whether the item has any evidentiary value,” Finn said.

The paint damage was reported to police early Sunday morning after a vehicle drove through wet paint at the site on Kalamalka Road.

“On July 21, 2019 between midnight and 1:45 am, an unknown person or persons spread white paint on the crosswalk used by beach goers to safely cross Kalamalka Lake Road from the parking lot to Kal Beach,” Finn said.

The paint has since been cleaned off by the District of Coldstream, as police ask people with information to come forward.

“Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Const. Louis Morrison of the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or leaving a tip online at www.nokscrimestoppers.com,” Finn said.

The district said the rainbow crosswalk was installed in 2017 at a cost of $5,000.

“This was in addition to the estimated cost of $6,100 to install the existing crosswalk. The rainbow crosswalk project was funded from the District of Coldstream budget,” a news release from the municipality said.
