Vernon North Okanagan RCMP say yesterday’s large police presence near a local bank on 32nd Street was due to a confrontation over personal property.

Witnesses at the scene allegedly saw a man threatening someone with a knife, who was suspected of going through someone’s personal belongings, police say.

“Police learned that the individuals entered into an altercation after a female was accused of going through property that was being stored behind a garbage bin,” RCMP Media Relations Officer Const. Kelly Brett said. “Through further investigation and a search of the immediate area, officers located a small BB gun and two knives, allegedly belonging to a man involved in the disturbance.”

No one was hurt in the incident.

At least three police cruisers were spotted in the parking lot of the bank.

Officers were seen speaking to people near the bushes, north of the bank at approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday.

A 34-year-old Vernon man now faces charges of uttering threats and possession of a weapon.

A 38-year-old Kelowna woman also faces charges of theft and possession of a controlled substance.

The pair were released from custody and are expected to appear in court to speak to the charges.
