Folks on Spokes clean up

It’s a lot of garbage.

The Folks on Spokes clean teams have been collecting a huge bag of garbage per day in the downtown, according to Rachael Zubick of the Community Safety Office.

The clean teams are armed with a mobile janitor’s cart, having been hired to keep the downtown tidy and and collect improperly disposed needles.

Since the program began in April, more than 60 large bags full of garbage have been picked up.

“Every time they go out, they are coming back with a contractor-size bag of garbage,” Zubick said.

Sharps continue to be collected as well.

So far this month, 46 sharps were picked up, although that does not include calls to the sharps hotline which is used by businesses to report discarded needles near their premises, Zubick stated.

In a report to council last month, Zubick said between May 24 to June 10, the clean teams collected 100 needles.

Another 22 were picked up after calls to the hotline.
