Update: Vandalism causes outage

Update:

BC Hydro says Monday’s power outage, affecting 2,200 customers, was caused by vandalism.

“This was the result of someone interfering with our equipment,” said a company statement.

“In this case, an individual was seen shaking a guy wire that is used to secure a power pole to the ground. The shaking caused the pole to sway and the power lines move, leading them to arc and resulted in a power outage.”

Hydro said crews attended the scene, made the repairs and restored power around 7 p.m.

Our crews attended the scene, made the necessary repairs and restored power at around 7p.m.

“We want to remind the public that interfering with electrical equipment is extremely dangerous and can lead to serious injury and even death.”

Update:

Jenn Walker Larson of BC Hydro says crews are working to restore power to the 2381 customers affected.

She said crews aim to have power restored by 7 p.m. tonight.

A cause of the outage is still not known, but there was an earlier report of down lines at Old Kamloops Road and Haney Rd.

It is unclear if the two incidents are connected.

BC Hydro is investigating the cause of a major power outage that has left thousands without power, including in the downtown.

According to Hydro’s website, areas affected include south of 37 Avenue, north of Highway 6, west of Bodwell Road, and east of 27 Street.

A total 2,381 customers are without power.

The cause is not yet known.

Two smaller power outages have also been reported; including one on the 1800 block of 53 Avenue and the other on the 4000 block of 30 Avenue, at the start of Bella Vista Road, and the 4000 block of 32 Avenue.

A total of 23 customers are estimated to be without power.
