$14,000 to be spent

Coldstream invests in speed control signs

The District of Coldstream is taking action to combat speeders.

Council has approved spending $14,000 for two speed reader signs which will first be used at problem sites on Kalamalka Road.

District Administrator Trevor Seibel said the primary location for the signs on Kal Road will be east of Aberdeen Road.

District staff said the signs have 15 inch LED displays, solar power, data recording, bluetooth data recovery, and the display can be turned off for more accurate data acquisition.

“The boards are mounted on short street light standards so can be moved, but not often and at a cost of a couple of days labour,” Michael Baker, infrastructure services, said in a report to council.

“This option is recommended as it deals with council’s objective of obtaining information for possible traffic calming as well as, may in itself, help with speed control,” Baker concluded.

Baker said there are multiple companies that provide the recorders, and research has identified that the products and costs are generally similar.

“There are multiple sizes available depending on the speed of the roadway and the portability of the product. The signs range in size and price from approximately $12,000 to $20,000,” Baker said.
