Fewer pay taxes on time

Tax deadline day led to lineups at Vernon City Hall, but it wasn’t as busy as past years.

The city’s Manager of Revenue Services Cindy Barker said 86 per cent of property owners paid their bill by the July 2 deadline, down from the usual 90 to 93 per cent.

The 14 per cent that didn’t pay on time have been assessed a 10 per cent penalty.

“Next steps for the city is we will be sending out property tax arrears notices the week of July 15 notifying property owners of any outstanding tax amounts,” Barker said.

A total of 20,915 property tax notices were mailed out earlier this year.

As for how people paid, 36 per cent of payments were processed in person at city hall, 28 per cent were received by mail, courier, mortgage centers, or drop boxes, and 36 per cent were received electronically.
