Wind stirs up levels

Advisory could be lifted at beach

A water quality advisory remains in effect for Kin Beach in Vernon with an update expected later today.

The city and Interior Health issued the advisory for the beach on Okanagan Lake last Friday, recommending people not swim there due to high bacterial counts.

Parks planner Kendra Kryzak said results of the latest tests should be known this afternoon.

“We took a sample at the beginning of the week, and we should get those results today. I’m hoping they’ve gone down (levels). It hasn’t been too windy and stirring up anything,” Kryzak told Vernon Matters.

Kryzak says the wind seems to be the biggest factor in stirring up the bacterial levels.

“Every time we have collected (samples) since the last time, it has been extremely windy. The milfoil hasn’t been removed as of yet and there is a bit more geese this year as well, so a lot of things can be taken into consideration. The wind and the stirring up the bottom is a major [factor].”

Signs have been posted about the advisory since last Friday, and Kryzak is not aware of anyone suffering illness from swimming at the beach.
