More cash for elected officials

Pay hike approved for GVAC directors

Jul 8, 2019 | 5:30 AM

Municipal directors and alternates on the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee will see a slight increase in pay after the board voted to approve a monthly $171 pay increase.

The salary jump for the municipal directors would bring the monthly renumeration in line with Electoral Area directors at $872 a month.

Greater Vernon Advisory Committee Chair Akbal Mund argued the pay increase is justified because of the scope of responsibility that the committee holds.

“You are dealing with a $40 million budget, which is half the RDNO budget, and the time commitment for the meetings, dealing with GVW and the cultural centre. Everything needs a lot more than actually sitting on the RDNO board,” he said.

While Alternate Director Pat Cochrane voted in favor of the pay increase at Thursday’s meeting, he was not convinced the pay hike is necessary for directors also serving on the RDNO board.

“For those of you that are also the regional district directors, it seems to me that you are doing all the meetings and everything else that you might have to do to be a member of this board already and being paid for that,” Cochrane said.

The monthly $872 salary is in addition to the amount members are paid to attend meetings.

As it currently stands, each director, alternate director or elected official is paid $182 for every meeting they are required to attend at the Regional District of the North Okanagan, while the board chair receives an additional $16 to attend meetings.

The annual cost of the pay hike stands at $14,364 for the Regional District of North Okanagan.
