Council to discuss dog fence and private security

Jul 8, 2019 | 5:30 AM

Vernon council will discuss options for dealing with off-leash dogs in Marshall Fields, at today’s meeting.

Staff are making a number of recommendations including adding a four foot-high chain-link fence and signage to separate the dog area and the soccer fields, at a cost of $87,000.

Other proposed measures like moving the footpath to address safety and erosion around Vernon Creek, would add another $150,000 to the bill.

Also at council today, city staff will be seeking more details over an idea to hire private security to supplement crime enforcement.

Councillor Scott Anderson led a motion to get staff to investigate the cost of nighttime seasonal security by a private firm in specific locations.

At today’s meeting, staff will seek clarity on where the funding would come from, and what crimes and areas would be included.

Staff wants direction on what would be included in the petty crimes that would be targeted.

“Specifically, does this include panhandling, loitering, gathering in public places, sleeping/resting on public sidewalk or on a public bench?” wrote CAO Will Pearce in a memo to mayor and council.
