Update: Weather scuttles opening night for concerts

Jul 4, 2019 | 12:16 PM

Update

The first Civic Sounds concert of the summer has been cancelled tonight due to rain in the forecast.

Dudley Coulter, Events and Marketing Coordinator with the Downtown Vernon Association, says it was a tough decision, but safety and quality standards have to be considered.

“Significantly less people will attend an event in the rain,” said Coulter.

The next concert at the Civic Plaza is scheduled for Thursday, July 11 featuring the Feet First Band.

6 Shades of Grey was scheduled to perform tonight and Coulter says there is a possibility the cancelled concert will be rescheduled for the end of the summer.

“We will explore the possibility of adding a bonus concert at the end of August,” Coulter added.

The wet weather may put a damper on the opening event for Civic Sounds.

The Downtown Vernon Association, which runs the summer events, says the concert tonight in the Civic Square may be cancelled due to the weather.

A decision will be made by 2 this afternoon, and we will pass that on.

“In 2019, the only things that would cancel a concert are rain and/or lightning,” said Dudley Coulter, Events and Marketing Coordinator with the Association.

A couple of concerts in 2018 were scrubbed due to smoky conditions caused by wildfires.
