Hotels anticipating big business Canada Day long weekend

Jun 28, 2019 | 6:04 PM

With events like Funtastic and the fireworks, Canada’s big birthday bash is once again expected to draw in thousands.

Ange Chew of Tourism Vernon said hotels are projected to be at or near full capacity.

“Usually we are at almost sold out levels, especially with the Funtastic softball tournament coming in. They bring a lot of teams in. This year we are expected be a little softer than we have been in the past but we are hoping with normal drive traffic, and some last minute bookings that we will fill up,” she said.

Predator Ridge Resort is forecasting a long weekend that is busier than previous years.

“This is looking like it’s going to be the best Canada Day long weekend ever,” said Predator Ridge General Manager Rod Cochrane.

“We are at capacity at the lodge, our golf courses are near capacity, all of our restaurant bookings. We’ve got two weddings happening this weekend.”

The same can be said for Silver Star Mountain Resort, which is almost at full capacity.

“Canada Day long weekend is always a really fun time up at the mountain. It’s kind of the kick off to summer and the mountain biking season up at the Star and we always like to celebrate it a pretty big way,” said Chantelle Deacon, Media Relations and Sponsorship Manager at the resort.

The resort is hosting several events including the Slay The Dragon running race, the Okanagan24 bike race, and the Sunday Roast.

Visitors will be treated to live music and a beer garden, and on Canada Day, cake as well as snow cones will be served.

For the kids, a scavenger hunt will take place and the gondola will operate so people can enjoy a ride.
