42 per cent have yet to pay

Time running out to pay tax bill

Line-ups have become common at Vernon City Hall — and other municipal offices — this time of year.

Residents are rushing-in to pay their civic tax bills which are due by July 2 to avoid a penalty.

Manager of Revenue Services Cindy Barker said 58 per cent of property owners paid their tax bill as of yesterday. Forty-two per cent haven’t paid yet.

She said the numbers are similar to past years at this time.

If the tab isn’t paid by midnight Tuesday July 2, the property owner will be assessed a 10 per cent penalty on the outstanding amount, which Barker admits is fairly common.

“We had 1,356 property tax accounts that did not pay property taxes — or a portion of their property taxes — last year,” Barker told Vernon Matters. She said there was an ongoing line-up today.

“We’ve brought in extra staff to help with that. I would recommend that people try to avoid coming in from noon to 2 p.m. because we are short staffed due to lunch hour,” she said.

Barker said at this late date, people should be making their payment at city hall, and not by mail, as they don’t accept post-dated payments.

“We have a drop box inside city hall and we also have two drop boxes at the city hall front doors for people who want to drop it off after hours,” she said.

While city hall is only open to 4:30 p.m. on July 2, people have until midnight to make their payment at the outside drop box to avoid the penalty.
