All quiet on wildfire front

Jun 27, 2019 | 3:48 PM

The wildfire situation remains quiet in the Kamloops Fire Centre on the verge of the Canada Day long weekend.

The B.C. Wildfire Service is reporting just four active fires in the centre with two small new fires and two under control.

The fire danger rating is very low to moderate.

Taylor MacDonald, fire information officer with the service, said a number of factors are involved in the low numbers.

“It seems people are being pretty FireSmart, being pretty cautious. We haven’t had too hot of weather, even a bit of rain,” she said.

The centre had 92 fires since April, burning 992 hectares.

Provincially there are 50 active fires with 20 of those in the Coastal Fire Centre.

There is only one wildfire of note — the Alkali Lake Fire in the Northwest Fire Centre.

For people going out into the woods for the long weekend, the advice is fairly straight forward.

“Just make sure, if you do have a campfire, making sure they are FireSmart and having the proper tools on site. Making sure they are safe on the back roads and in the back country as well,” MacDonald told Vernon Matters.
