Online crime reporting project piloted in Okanagan

A new way to report less serious crimes to the RCMP is being tried out in part of the Okanagan.

Kelowna RCMP, which is the largest RCMP detachment in the province’s southern interior, has been chosen to be a part of an online crime reporting pilot project, being launched at four RCMP detachment’s across British Columbia this summer.

Today is the official launch date of the B.C. RCMP Online Crime Reporting tool, set to serve residents across the Central Okanagan.

As frontline RCMP officers investigative file loads increase, the B.C. RCMP are launching an online crime reporting website, which will enable the general public to report non-emergency, mostly property-related crimes that are not in progress, or require no further follow-up by a police officer.

“This tool will allow the general public to report non-emergency crimes online through the detachment website, with the goal of freeing up time for frontline personnel, including both police dispatchers and police officers, to respond to more serious crimes or emergencies,” Supt. Brent Mundle, Officer-In-Charge of the Kelowna Regional Detachment, said.

“This online system exemplifies our efforts to actively modernize our police operations here in Kelowna and keep up with technological advances,” Mundle added. “It will also allow our frontline personnel to focus on other essential core duties.”

Residents and business owners from across the Kelowna Regional Detachment area, which includes the City of Kelowna, the City of West Kelowna, the District of Peachland and the District of Lake Country, with a valid email address, will be able to use the Online Crime Reporting Tool or OCRe using their computers, smart phones or tablets to report a crime that meets the following criteria:

Your report will NOT require a follow up by a police officer
You have no witness nor suspect
You have lost something that costs less than $5,000
Someone has stolen something from you that costs less than $5,000
Someone has vandalized your property or car and it will cost less than $5,000 to repair it
There are no items involving personal identity, firearms, licence plates or licence plate validation decals.
