The B.C. government has given approval for the first recreational cannabis store in Vernon to open.

The Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch has approved a licence for SpiritLeaf to open at 102 2500 54th Avenue in the north part of the city.

The store expects to open in early July.

The Vernon store is one of 35 approved in the province so far. It joins one in Kamloops, two in Salmon Arm and one in Sicamous. So far there are no approved stores in Kelowna or Lake Country.

The Salmon Arm stores are Green Canoe Cannabis, 7390 50th Street North East, and The Greenery Cannabis Boutique, 2-190 Trans Canada Highway North East.

The Sicamous location is High Mountain Cannabis at 12 433 Finlayson Street.

Vernon is also scheduled to get a government-run BC Cannabis Store on 58th Avenue near Walmart, which has been approved by city council, but has no firm opening date.

In an update on non-medical cannabis private retail store licence applications issued today, the government said it received 496 paid applications.

“Once applicants pay the $7,500 fee, the application and documentation are reviewed for completeness,” the website said.

Three-hundred and fifty application packages were forwarded to local governments or Indigenous nations.

“Once an application contains the required documentation and the fee has been paid, the province forwards the application to the local government or Indigenous nation of the area where the proposed store will be located,” the government release said.

Three hundred and six of the applications were given local government support.

“This is the number of applications forwarded to local governments which have indicated they are ready to consider non-medical cannabis retail store applications at this time,” the website added.

The branch says 35 licences were issued, with 24 approved in principle.

“Once an application has passed financial integrity assessment and security screening, the province issues an Approval in Principle. A licence is issued after a successful inspection of the retail location for regulatory compliance.”
