Golfers unite to help kids play sports

Jun 24, 2019 | 11:43 AM

The first KidSport Greater Vernon Golf Tournament scored a hole in one for the local charity.

Eighteen-thousand dollars was raised at the event last week at the Vernon Golf and Country Club through sponsorships, draws and a silent auction.

The total made it the single largest fundraiser for KidSport Greater Vernon.

“The goal for this fun event was to raise funds to allow kids the opportunity to experience sport in our community. Through the generosity of our sponsors and the participants we will be able to assist an estimated 85 kids to participate in a season of sport,” Doug Ross, the director of recreation services, said.

Ross told attendees KidSport kids are anonymous and suggested that the next time they were passing by a field, pitch or diamond or attended a rink that they smile and remember that one of the kids participating could be the child they supported.

Rob Bauml of silver sponsor Summit Financial told the participants how important sport had been to him. He added he told his own children that when they grow up they could join a team in any city to make a new group of friends — one of the many benefits of sports.

The low scoring team was Myron and Suzanne Hocevar, Bob Carscadden and Trudi Walker.

The grand prize of three nights at Predator Ridge and Dean Barnard of Summit Financial won two rounds of golf courtesy of the Chambers Group and Predator Ridge.

KidSport’s mission is to remove the financial barriers that prevent some children from participating in organized sport.

Since 2001, KidSport has assisted thousands of families.

All money raised locally stays in the community and supports participation in the North Okanagan from Cherryville to Enderby.
