Second car fire in a few days

Car fires shock Centennial Drive residents

Jun 19, 2019 | 9:27 AM

Residents of Centennial Drive in Vernon are wondering what is going on following car fires, a stabbing and reports of shots fired.

One resident of a duplex on the street woke up their neighbour around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday to find a car on fire.

Vernon Fire Rescue confirmed crews attended the blaze and extinguished the Chrysler 300.

Fire Capt. Rob Cucheran confirmed the blaze is suspicious in nature and that the RCMP are investigating.

“We didn’t go anywhere near the car for a good hour,” said the woman who watched her vehicle burn. “We were told there was a gas can beside the car.”

Cucheran also confirmed crews attended a separate car fire in the same area just days ago.

“On June 14 at 3 a.m., fire crews attended a car fire at the same address,” Cucheran said.

Two people have told Vernon Matters they have heard what they believe are shots fired close to the neighbourhood over the past few weeks.

They also mentioned a stabbing that occurred in a separate area of the same street.

RCMP reported that on the night of June 4, a man suffered non-life threatening injuries after being stabbed by a suspect who broke into his Centennial Drive apartment in a targeted attack.

“I’d like to move but there is nowhere to rent in this dumb town,” said the victim of the latest car fire.
