Solid Year But Hiring Challenges Remain, Says DVA

Downtown businesses expect further challenges in hiring workers and in tech security in 2019 but, overall, a solid year is anticipated, according to the Downtown Vernon Association.

The DVA, which represents 600 commercial property and business owners, held its annual general meeting this week.

A press release states: “Despite the anticipated challenges to businesses in 2019 around employee recruitment, succession planning, tech security, and the ever-rising taxes that impact the costs to business owners, we anticipate 2019 to be a solid year for the DVA.”

The association highlights the upcoming 25th annual Sunshine Festival, a planned revitalization of the heritage murals, increased activities in support of the growing Vernon bike scene and active transportation,  and improvements in the social stability of downtown Vernon.

“The property and business owners in downtown Vernon are the most creative, resilient, engaged and supportive community with all the small-town charm, kindness and authenticity that makes downtown Vernon a very special neighbourhood,” says Susan Lehman, the DVA’s executive director.

The DVA reports last year was a strong and busy one, with 30 new enterprises moving into Vernon’s business improvement areas, continuing infrastructure improvements by the city and the redevelopment of the old Liquidation World site on 30th Avenue.
