Hurlburt Park Upgrade Proceeds

Improvements to Hurlburt Park are back on track.

The City of Vernon has accepted a bid of $510,271 to upgrade the beach on Okanagan Lake, off Eastside Road.

The work to make the site safer and more accessible, should start in April and be done by mid-June.

“The contractor has indicated that they may be able to start earlier than April 2019 but this decision will depend on the weather and the completion of other projects,” says a staff report. “The park has therefore been re-opened to the public until the contractor notifies the City that work will commence.”

The City received three bids for the upgrade, and went with the lowest one.

An earlier bid process resulted in only one bid which was significantly over budget.

“It’s good news there was a successful tender, and the closed sign can come down, allowing people to use it until work begins in the spring,” said councillor Brian Quiring.

The City took over control of the park last year from the Regional District of North Okanagan.

RDNO bought the 2.5 acre site from the Trinity United Church in 2015 after the church used it for camp-outs and programs for many decades when it was known as Camp Hurlburt.
