Imaginary Crash At Airport

RCMP, Ambulance and Fire Rescue were among the agencies that took part in an imaginary plane crash at the Vernon Airport today.

Airport supervisor Ian Adkins says the table top exercise allows responding agencies to work through the Emergency Response Plan.

“An incident at the airport could require the involvement of all these agencies,” says Adkins.

City of Vernon staff including Bylaw officers, Airport, Communications and Emergency Support Services staff were also involved.

Local pilots with knowledge of planes that use the airport were on hand to explain how to deal with an inverted aircraft and some of the issues that can occur in a plane crash.

Adkins says the City has a regulatory requirement to hold a table top exercise annually, and a major practice scenario once every four years.

“I think everyone comes away with a good refresher on dealing with airport incidents and each time we learn something new.”

“These exercises provide us with an opportunity to practice executing emergency plans together. We build relationships, identify gaps in the plans and make adjustments in a safe environment,” says Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Management David Lind.
