Enderby Could Get North Ok’s First Pot Shops

Enderby could be the first North Okanagan community where legal retail cannabis stores will open.

The City has had three applications which will go to a public hearing Dec 17th.

“We’ll let our community voice their opinions and see what they think. We’ve got a pretty good set of bylaws to allow us to get this procedure in place,” says Mayor Greg McCune.

The applications are for stores at #4-802 George Street, 900 George Street and 601A Cliff Avenue.

McCune tells Beach Radaio News, he has a problem with the one proposed for Cliff Avenue.

“It’s across from the library. It isn’t the atmosphere we’re looking for. I know it’s legal, but just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s the right location. My personal feeling is I don’t believe it should be on main street.”

The mayor says the applications are all within a half block of each other.

“But if we’re going to create this atmosphere where we want people coming downtown in the evenings through the summer — we have multiple events — I just don’t know if that’s the proper spot. But it’s not just up to me, so we’ll see what the community says.”

McCune says his council hasn’t put a cap on the number of recreational stores that will be allowed, saying that will be determined by the market.

He’s not sure it’s going to be a “gold mine” like some people are thinking.

“The City, we are anticipating and trying to foresee the problems that will be associated with it. I don’t know if people understand it yet. I think a lot of people just think it’s going to be wonderful.”
