Budget Work Starts Earlier

Armstrong council is getting to work earlier on its annual budget.

“Armstrong is changing this year. We’re going to try to get it wrapped up by the end of December. Normally we wait until March or April to work on it,” Mayor Chris Pieper tells Beach Radio News.

Pieper (pictured) says the city’s new Chief administrative officer and Chief financial officer have both done financial plans earlier in their past positions.

“So they were just looking for some kind of guidance of where they wanted to go.”

Pieper says council directed staff to keep tax increases to the cost of living.

“Our police costs have increase drastically because we went over 5,000 (population), so the policing costs will be a line item that we get invoiced from the provincial government, and whatever we have to pay, we have to pay.”

Pieper says the city will be paying for four officers, and support staff.

“We don’t have a dollar figure yet, but we have some reserves we can use, but we want to maintain some reserves for emergency purposes.”
