Pot Sales, Or Not: City Gets Feedback

The City of Armstrong wants to find out what its residents think about allowing cannabis stores in the community.

Mayor Chris Pieper says council has decided to get feedback on the issue of retail sales, through an online survey, a mail-out form, and an open house.

He says they want to find out if the shops should be restricted to certain commercial areas, of if they’re not wanted at all.

“I think we’ll have a wide range of opinions, but each application still has to have a public hearing.That’s part of the rules the provincial government put forward,” Pieper tells Beach Radio News.

“We want to get some public input on this to see where people are coming from before we have applications . We currently do not have any applications, but like every community, we’re expecting them.”

Pieper expects a public meeting will likely be held in January.

“We would like to have it before that, but I don’t think it’s going to work to get it organized,” says Pieper.

The mayor says the online survey and mail-out will be issued over the next few weeks.

“We’re going to work through this process with the community and see where it ends up.”

Pieper says any applicant will first have to apply to the province for a license which carries a $7,500 fee.
