Vandalized proportional representation sign in Vernon (submitted)

A group supporting a change to proportional representation in BC says it’s perplexed and disturbed about some vandalism to its signs.

Members of Fair Vote Vernon say some of their signs have been torn down, stolen, or had parts added to them.

“Not satisfied with spreading disinformation, fear and confusion, they have now chosen to vandalize, tear down and obstruct our Pro Rep signs. Their signs, unlike ours that are authorized under Elections BC campaign rules, bear no authorization and are placed deliberately to confuse the message,” says a release from Fair Vote Vernon.

Group members say their signs were paid for by their volunteers, and they will not be going after the other sides signs.

“While we regret these disrespectful tactics, we will not be entering into “sign wars.” We respect the right of both sides to place authorized signs where they wish.”

BC is in the midst of a mail in referendum on electoral reform, with residents having until Nov. 30 to decide if we keep the current first-past-the-post voting system or change to a system of proportional representation.
