Officers Honoured For Bravery

Three Kelowna Mounties have been honoured for their bravery.

Constables Marvin Park, Lee Romanko and Ryan Routley have been presented with bronze medals by the Royal Canadian Humane Society for their heroic actions.

The three put their own lives in jeopardy to rescue a woman from a burning mini van in September.

“On September 10th, the three general duty police officers worked together to rescue an unconscious and injured woman from inside her minivan that had struck a light standard in the parking lot of a Kelowna hotel. A short time after being pulled from the vehicle, the woman’s van became fully engulfed in flames. The woman survived the ordeal. The dramatic rescue was caught on camera from the room of a hotel patron,” says RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

The Bronze Medal for bravery is reserved for heroes who show extraordinary disregard for their personal safety in order to save a life.

Nineteen award recipients from across British Columbia were in West Kelowna last week to take part in an awards ceremony held by the BC Lieutenant Governor Janet Austin.

The Royal Canadian Humane Association was established in 1894 by Queen Victoria.

“Today its purpose is to provide meaning recognition to those persons who, through their alertness, skill, and concern bring about the saving of life, especially where those actions lie outside the ordinary duties of the person involved,” says O’Donaghey.
