BC First Private Pot Store Approved

BC’s first legal, private cannabis retail store is expected to open in the Kootenays.

The license was issued by the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch to Tamarack Cannabis Boutique in Kimberly, and is effective Thursday.

It will be up to the store operator to decide when it will open.

The province has had over 200 applications for pot store licenses which require security screening and local government support.

The first government-operated BC Cannabis Store opened in Kamloops two weeks ago, Oct. 17.

Kamloops council has voted unanimously to grant licenses to two privately-owned cannabis retail stores planned for the North Shore.

One of them will be on Tranquille Road in a business district, which generated controversy, as its across the street from the Canadian Safe Cannabis Society, a medical dispensary operating without a license but serving hundreds of Kamloops citizens.

Private and public retailers may sell dried cannabis, cannabis oils and capsules that comply with federal requirements.

These stores may also sell cannabis accessories as defined in the federal Cannabis Act, such as rolling papers, pipes and bongs.
