France Came to Dance: FIFA World Cup Champs

France won its second World Cup title by beating Croatia 4-2 today.

Teenage forward Kylian Mbappe scored his fourth goal of the tournament for France and the team’s fourth in the 65th minute at Luzhniki Stadium.

Mbappe, who is 19, is only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final. Pele was 17 when he scored two goals for Brazil in the 1958 final.

Canada, of course, did not have a team in this year’s tournament or in any World Cup other than 1986, when it finished in last place and did not score a goal.

However Canadians really got into it…especially in Montreal, home to nearly 57,000 French nationals.

A two-storey-tall French flag covered the front of bar l’Barouf in the Plateau-Mont Royal neighbourhood.

There you could see fans waving flags, honking horns and cheered on their team with calls of “Allez Les Bleus as police tried to keep the elated crowd from spilling onto the street.

Just a little different on the other side of the pond. Fans in the capital Zagreb crammed into squares and streets and were full of hope and cheering until the last moment.

As expected when the game ended 4-2, devoted Croat fans couldn’t hide their obvious sadness and disappointment…but many said they were happy at what Croatia has achieved.

France coach Didier Deschamps was thrown into the air in a celebration by his players after becoming just the third person to win the World Cup as a coach and as a player.

Deschamps was captain of the France squad that won the World Cup on home soil in 1998.
