Ranch Plan Gets City Support

Jun 26, 2018 | 6:12 AM

Vernon council likes the progress being made by the new team in charge of the city-owned O’Keefe Ranch.

Ranch transition manager Sherrilee Franks was before council Monday, making three requests.

“I’m requesting to allow Caroline Fletcher, Heartland Bakery, to provide food services in the gift shop and around the grounds. Number 2, I’m requesting to be allowed bee hives to be placed on site (to make and harvest honey), and number 3, we are requesting $25,000 of grant money,” said Franks.

Council approved all three of the requests — and went a step further, providing 44-thousand dollars in grant money, on  a motion made by councillor Scott Anderson.

“I’ve seen a huge change on the board,” said Anderson.

That fulfills the city’s commitment of 100-thousand dollars for this year.

“We have completed all actionable items as requested for this grant, as well as all the low priority action items for the remaining grant, ” added Franks

The city grant will drop to 50-thousand next year, and to nothing in a couple more years, as the ranch moves toward self sufficiency
