Enderby Considers Small City Conference Addictions/Homelessness

Enderby Council is looking beyond the October civic election for a project to take on dealing with addiction and homelessness.

Mayor Greg McCune says small communities don’t often have an opportunity to discuss what’s normally seen as a big city issue.

The city has talked with Interior health about Enderby and the Splatsin hosting a small community forum in November

“That would bring in places like Chase, Sicamous, Armstrong, Spallumcheen. Some of those places that don’t get the opportunity to hear what the larger cities are hearing and help us to understand.”

He says it would help to find out how to move forward and what the hurdles are.

He says smaller communities don’t always have the resources available to help people or even deal with needle finds.

“Where you know the belief is that people that oh my god if my kid picks up that needle and now they’re going to be deadly sick and it’s just not true. I think the more people understand, you know, kind of the myths and what’s actually happening, the better off we’ll all be.”

McCune says Enderby is looking at setting up a Sharps dispenser in the community.

A bit more research needs to be done to determine the right spot and how and where it would be disposed of.
