Carnival Society Given Building Extension

The Vernon Winter Carnival Society has been given more time to find a new home.

The City had planned to evict the society in September from its current office on 35th Avenue due to flooding and safety concerns.

Carnival chair Deb White told council, they’ve been working with the city to find another suitable site, but so far have not been successful .

“There are so many archives and memories built up over 58 years, such as trophies, scrapbooks and memorabilia, which we want to ensure that they find a home where they can be represented and honoured by all of the citizens of the city,” said White.

Council granted the group an indefinite extension, with the society saying they will keep looking for a new home.

White says their building has been cleared of air quality and mold concerns.

“The building was found to be safe and there was no impact on the air quality at the time of sampling. There is no health concern with the working building, and if there was, we would be the first to remove our staff and volunteers.”

The society had been facing eviction from the city-owned building Sept. 15th, with the city planning to tear it down due to flooding and health issues.
