Vernon Mayor Promotes Downtown Cultural Facility

Jun 25, 2018 | 10:38 AM

Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund says our current art gallery and museum are old and its time to replace them.

The public will be asked to approve borrowing 25 million dollars towards the 40 million dollar cost of the proposed new arts and culture centre during a referendum this October.

“I’m hoping that everybody supports it and come October we have a yes vote and then we can start looking for government grants, community supporters, donations.”

Some people would prefer to see a new pool but Mund says the current art gallery and museum are in dire need of replacement.

“The museum and art gallery in our community, they’re old, it’s time to renew them. You have to pick and choose. I think the pool will be on discussion within the next five years, you know and a new recreation centre.”

If approved, Mund says the facility would go in the Vernon block downtown and would benefit many local businesses.

He said a new centre in the downtown would be a boon to local business.

“People go to community, they explore and I just think by adding facilities such as the new multi-use cultural facility downtown is going to be a benefit to everybody in the downtown core.”

The facility is estimated to cost 40-million dollars, with residents to be asked to approve 25-million in borrowing.
