Right To Farm Act An Issue For Coldstream

Jun 22, 2018 | 10:29 AM

Coldstream Council is hoping to have a meeting with a couple of cabinet ministers at this fall’s UBCM convention.

Council’s Committee of the Whole wants staff to request a meeting with the Agriculture and Housing Ministers to talk about modernizing the Right to Farm Act

Mayor Jim Garlick says it’s been talked about for years, including an expression of concern from former M-L-A L Lyall Hanson.

“In our research we went through meeting minutes and he was the minister that expressed the most concerns over it heading in the direction that there was no input anymore from local government.”

Garlick admits it’s a bit of a dance for the district being a mix of farming and residential.

“We have bigger operations moving into the community. It’s no longer just the mom dad and family with a small farm in it.”

He points to the VegPro operation as an example.

Garlick says it’s a matter of looking to see what still works and what needs to change.
