Recreational Cannabis Date Set: City of Vernon Ready

Jun 20, 2018 | 4:53 PM

The federal government have announced that as of Oct. 17. it will be legal for recreational marijuana use in Canada.

Nick Nilson with the City of Vernon tells Beach Radio News the practice of on-line sales does not omit them from City regulations as they stand today.

He believes there are two dispensaries that offer on-line sales and they could be liable for fines up to a thousand dollars a day for eluding those regulations.

He does admit that tracking them down may be difficult

With today’s announcement, the City of Vernon has begun getting their proposed zoning regulations in place, which of course will come down to further directives from the federal government.

As far as the proposed zoning regulations the city will be working on, shop owners should not expect any zoning surprises.

“We’ve been working on it for some time already and of course as a Municipality we have jurisdiction over many aspects of cannabis sales such as the zoning for sure, which will include the density and location of those stores…but also business licensing, building codes, smoking restrictions, enforcement and even regulations around public consumption”.

Nilson says it’s an evolving procedure and they believe they are in good position to move forward up to legalization day.
