City To Mark National ‘Day of Mourning’

The City of Vernon will observe the national Day of Mourning next week.

The day honours workers who have been killed, injured, or suffered illness as a result of work-related incidents.

Residents are invited to join dignitaries at city hall for next Friday’s event which takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Startling statistics show that 158 workers died in B.C. last year due to work-related injury or illness.

About one-thousand workers die in Canada annually.

Speakers at the Vernon event will include Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster, city councillor Juliette Cunningham and representatives of WorksafeBC, BCMSA, RCMP, IAFF and CUPE.

The Canadian Labour Congress first recognized the Day of Mourning in 1984. In 1990, the day became a national observance with the passing of the Workers Mourning Day Act, and on April 28, 1991, the federal government officially proclaimed the national Day of Mourning.
