Straw-free Vernon?

Some local restaurants are joining the straw-free challenge.

The co-owner of The Sprouted Fig on 30th Avenue issued the challenge on Facebook last Monday.

“We just found a compostible straw so we decided to share that we were doing that now,” said David Scarlatescu of The Sprouted Fig in an interview with Beach Radio News.

Although it has only been a few days, Scarlatescu said he’s had a great response to his Facebook challenge.

“I’ve had good feedback from places like Brown’s and Ratio and other businesses in town that have decided to take the challenge on.”

He said Midtown Bistro had already given up plastic straws while others will switch once they run out of their current supply.

The effort, Scarlatescu said, was to stop more wasteful plastic from entering the ocean where the straws harm sea animals.
